I will remember one thing every time I hear the name Brett Kavanaugh

The circus has officially died down.

Christine Ford alleges she was sexually assaulted. Brett Kavanaugh denies this ever happened. It will be impossible to forget the scene that took place on Capitol Hill in the fall of 2018. Ford’s stirring testimony, Kavanaugh’s passionate defense. Senators attempting to leverage the events at hand to fit their own agendas.

What really happened in the summer of 1982 in Washington D.C.?

There are quite a few people on my social media feed that are certain they know exactly what did or did not occur. I’m not quite sure how this can be, but what do I know? I wasn’t even born yet.

With the FBI investigation and Supreme Court confirmation now in the rearview mirror, what will come to mind as Kavanaugh’s name is inevitably brought up in the coming years?

Personally, I could not help but imagine myself in Kavanaugh’s shoes during his hearing; cringing at the thought of every mishap and indiscretion from my teenage years under the microscope for the entire country to see.

(Let’s hope I never get questioned about this yearbook page…)

More importantly, it got me thinking about the day that I will stand before God.

What if I had to face a similar interrogation to determine my worthiness to spend eternity with Jesus in paradise? What if every shameful act and thought from throughout my life was meticulously analyzed, dissected, and questioned?

I imagine the humiliation as all the ways I have fallen short would be pointed out. I would cringe when asked about specific events and behaviors.

Prideful actions.

Lustful thoughts.

Greedy decisions.

Envious motives.

I would lower my head in shame, awaiting the inevitable guilty verdict.

I will be forever grateful that God doesn’t operate this way. Instead of forcing me to defend my every fault, God sent Jesus to take on the punishment that should have been mine. The ultimate acquittal offered freely, no questions asked, no justification required.

Because of this, when the day comes for me to stand before God, rather than shaming me for my choices, He will lift up my face and welcome me into His presence with a clean slate.

Like it or not, Brett Kavanaugh will have a say in key decisions affecting our nation for decades to come. Every time I hear his name it will be a reminder to be thankful for the sacrifice Jesus made on my behalf.

No matter which way you lean politically, that’s some great news.
